Woodworking is not only the physical act of making things, but the thought, design and passion that goes into crafting an heirloom quality piece that is as beautiful as it is functional.
My passion for woodworking started when I was in high school and I wanted to find an activity that I could do with my dad. He taught me how to use the power tools we already had, and we acquired more of them as my skills and interest grew. Ever since then, I have immersed myself in learning all there is to know about woodworking, including an ever growing passion for using hand tools. I have bachelors and masters degrees in Technology Education, and I work full time as a woodworking, engineering and architecture teacher. I am also a member of the Eastern Massachusetts Guild of Woodworkers.
In my work, I focus on sustainability, quality, and using materials that are both local and have a story behind them. The end use of materials is always top of my mind. I prefer to use materials that are either recyclable or biodegradable. I would hate to think that when a piece’s useful life has ended it will end up in a landfill. In this same vein, I focus on doing quality work that will stand the test of time and will be used for generations to come.
When sourcing materials, I try my hardest to find local wood and buy it from local businesses. As a small business owner myself, I understand the importance of supporting my local economy and the wonderfully helpful and supportive businesses that I interact with frequently. When possible, I also like to use materials with an interesting back story, such as the porch joists that became the top to a media cupboard for that same home. Not only are these interesting materials beautiful, but they give even a new piece of work and a history.
I currently focus on the following types of work:
- Freestanding Furniture
- Built-ins
- Cabinets
- Custom sheds, for when a prebuilt shed won’t do
- Trim carpentry
- Wainscoting
- Porches
- Architectural Details
- Corbels
- Post Repair
- Railing Repair
